PC Sanghi addressing students at SSK in Chandigarh on April 25, 2015

Chandigarh, April 25, 2015 (News Team): Today in an educational excursion christen as ‘Garbage Run’, organized for 50 Eco-club students of St. Stephen’s School by Yuvsatta and Department of Environment, Chandigarh Administration, former Councilor and Ex-Chairman FOSWAC, PC Sanghi addressing them at SSK, Sector 21, Chandigarh, shared that consumerism and rat-race for materialistic goods in urban cities like Chandigarh is leading to excessive garbage generation and resultant health and environmental hazards.

PC Sanghi added that instead of falling in traps of multinational brands and fast-food joints, young students should become green consumers and whenever they make any purchase they should be mindful of environment related issues and obligations. He further added that Chandigarh urgently need formulation of waste management bylaws in absence of which there is no segregation of waste at household level, nobody is accountable for door to door waste collection which at present is at mercy of private safai wallas and people regularly complain about the foul smell emanating from SSK’s (Sehaj Safai Kendra’s) of all sectors and it’s also a mess at the dumping ground in Daddumajra.

Participating students of St. Stephen’s School who covered the whole trail of waste today from household to SSK to scrap-dealer and dumping ground promised to become Green Consumers and also participated in a ‘Green Quiz’ by Pramod Sharma, Coordinator of Yuvsatta. Five winners of which were later awarded books by Mahatma Gandhi as prizes by PC Sanghi.

In the end Aditi Bhalla accompanying teacher of the School shared that simplifying our life by not spending money on things that add noise and distract us from more meaningful aspects of life is the key to environment protection and health plus happiness on earth.
