Mumbai, Octuber 07, 2015 (Akash Sharma): Star Plus’s latest offering Sumit Sambhal Lega is quite different from your regular run-of-the-mill TV shows in more ways than one! The show is based on the life of The Walia family based in Delhi; played by actors Namit Das, Manasi Parekh Gohil, Satish Kaushik, Bharati Achrekar and Vikram Kochar.

And what is the one thing common between all these 5 actors that make up such a stellar ensemble cast? A solid background of theatre. That’s right; every character of the Walia family is an active theatre enthusiast.

Namit Das, our very own Sumit Walia reminisces, “My first income was actually a cheque with which I opened my bank account for the first time. My theatre director, my guru Atul Kumar gave me that cheque and I touched his feet. But I didn’t know what to do with the cheque and so he told me to open a bank account and I use the same account till date.”

Noted actor Satish Kaushik who plays head of the Walia family, Jasbir Walia, is till date fondly remembered for his role 'Willy Loman' in the Hindi-language play, Salesman Ramlal, an adaptation of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman. In his early days, Satish Kaushik joined the National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi, where he graduated in 1978. Years later, following his lead was actor Vikram Kochar who essays the role of Rajneesh Walia, Sumit’s brother who before this show was an active theatre artist. When asked on how he landed this role, Vikram shares, “It was through a friend of mine I had worked with in the Kolkata Theatre Circuit that I actually landed up with this role! I never felt like I was cut out for the TV space but somehow after his recommendation and my meet with Steve (Skrovan), things simply clicked.”

Dolly Walia played by veteran actor Bharati Achrekar started her acting career at the young age of 18 with theatre and years later, she says that there has been no looking back. She grew to become a household name through her prowess in Marathi Theatre and later in TV shows and Films. Ask her what her first love is and she’d still swear by the art form of Theatre.

On being asked a singular moment in her life that she can’t forget, Manasi Parekh Gohil shares, “My most unforgettable moment was when I performed my play at the Globe Theatre London and Jane Judy Jench came backstage to meet me and she told me that she loved my performance, that is something I will never forget in my life.”
