Talwandi Sabo, March 26, 2015 (Neel Kamal Sonu): On the occasion of “World Water Day” Guru Kashi University, Talwandi Sabo organized a seminar on “Ground Water Crisis Management in Punjab”. A renowned water management expert, Dr. G.S. Hira, who is the force behind the act on water savings framed by Govt. of Punjab for paddy transplanting, was the key expert.

The seminar was organized by the College of Agriculture. Dr. A.S. Sidhu, Dean of the College welcomed the guests and introduced Dr. G.S. Hira to the participants. He informed the house that Dr. Hira is an authority on water management and he retired from active service of PAU as Addl. Director of Research.

Dr. Hira in his speech clarified the myths of the people that canal seepage is responsible for water-logging in South-Western districts of Punjab. He suggested that sub-surface tube-wells should be installed in south-western districts to overcome the problem of water-logging. He told that the depletion of water table in central Punjab has been arrested after the transplanting of rice was delayed to June 10. Judicious use of underground water is the need of hour to save further depletion of soil water level.

Dr. N.S. Malhi, Vice-Chancellor of GKU, while delivering presidential address laid emphasis that Govt., PAU and farmers should work hand-in-hand to overcome the problem of depleting underground water and water logging under Punjab conditions. He explained various water saving technologies recommended under Punjab. Dr J.S. Brar compared the whole programme. At the end Dr. D.R. Godara, Dean Students Welfare proposed a vote of thanks. Faculty, students and staff attended the seminar in large number.
